I used to go to MSG shows back in the early 80's. MSG would show the card one month live and then not the next month. Top moments.

1. Hogan beats the Sheik--go watch the tape of this match and the place was going insane!! It is the best five minute match ever.
2. Snuka vs. Muraco (Cage)- I was pissed that Snuka did't win the IC title, but seeing the Superfly splash was tremendous.
3. Sheik beats Backlund- MSG is stunned disbelief. By then there was lots of anti-Backlund fans. He had been the champ for 5 years and his howdy doody act was getting old. Two months before he was booed preety bad when wrestling the masked Superstar.

I also enjoyed George "the Animal" Steele, "Backlund! Break!"

As a heel, Roddy Piper was the best. He was actually quick witted, it wasn't just some one dimensional shtick.

Ahh childhood..... I still remember the scrubs too.....Rene Goulet, Jose Luis Rivera, Steve Lombardi, Frank Williams, Bob Bradley, Charlie Fulton and of course Rudy Diamond.
You forgot SD Special Delivery Jones.

yep.....

He was one of my favorites growing up. Bob Backlund was a favorite of mine also....I remember when they turned him into a heel. That was a really bad gimmick they gave him.
Anybody remember Johnny Rodz......he was like SD jones... Never won a match but was fun to watch....a jobber..

The Red Rooster was a much better wrestler than the WWF permitted him to show. I remember seeing him in an old NWA match against Ric Flair and the guy used moves he never used when working for Vinny Mac. He almost beat Flair several times during the match.

How about Kerry Von Erich, the Texas Tornado. Poor guy killed himself because of a drug arrest.

Those Von Erich boys had worse luck than the Kennedy's. David, Mike, Chris, and Kerry all dead before they hit 30.

Roddy Piper is my fav all-time. I love when he told Hogan in the WCW circa 1995 that people wouldn't have loved Hogan in the 80's if they didn't hate Piper so much.

He was right.

That's a little too reductive. He had a monster for a father. He had four brothers die before him: two suicides. He had a foot severed in a motorcycle accident. He had tremendous drug and alcohol problems. To say he was troubled is putting it mildly.

Yes, two suicides. As I recall, they lost a little brother when he was seven. The kid died when he peed on the railroad tracks and was electrocuted. Another brother died of some kind of intestinal parasite. The other two put bullets in their brains.

That was the cover story. David died of a drug overdose. When Mike also almost o.d.'d, they told the world he was suffering from "toxic shock syndrome."

Toxic shock syndrome was all over the news at the time (kind of like avian flu is now), so that's what they ran with. The Von Erichs (aka Adkissons) had spent years constructing this phony image of themselves as the All American, god-fearing, squeaky clean, first family of Texas wrassling. The reality behind the public relations hype was incredibly dysfunctional and sordid. They needed to preserve their image by covering up the truth behind David's death, and behind Mike's near death (before his actual suicide). The chain of tragic suicides later brought everything out into the open.

Yeah, in Mexico, where it is more of a national pastime than here and the gymnastics in the ring are far superior to ours.

Nacho LIbre will rule the Mexico leagues. Anybody remembered the great back to back matches between Flair and Kerry von Erich. KErry finally beat Flair for the title in Their hometown of Texas I believe and then Flair beats him back in their rematch. That was scientific wrestling in its heyday before Vince and HOgan destroyed it with their power game. MY favorite hogan era wwf match was Savage-Steamboat Wrestlemania match 3.

A lot of the wrestlers used to come up to the 48th St Harmony on the afternoons of the WWF cards at MSG. T*#y A^%@s was a regular visitor. He used to take out the girls. He would buy a chick a pair of sneakers and bring her back to the Ramada, where the wrestlers stayed and have the girl walk on his back.
One afternoon back in 1985 Nicolai Volkoff and Rene Goulet came up to the Harmony to hang out. They were friends with the big fella who did the audio. I remember him asking everyone to please rise so Mr. Volkoff could sing the Russian National Anthem. It was a riot...I mean hysterically funny. Everyone was a good sport about it and played along. Aah, those were the good old days....

I used to work out at Ricky Steamboats gym in North Carolina. Nice guy. He told me some stories about the business which made me wonder why anybody would do that to themselves. Pimps treat hookers better than promoters treat wrestlers!

thats not surprising.

the promoters have do deal with an oversized goup of professionals with a collective IQ of perhaps a 100.

lol.

Eros, are you saying that Vince used to bang Ricky Steamboat in the ass as a reward for the IC belt in Wrestlemania 3.
