Thanks to Bush, Iraqi women are worse off

BASRA, Iraq — Women in Basra have become the targets of a violent campaign by religious extremists, who leave more than 15 female bodies scattered around the city each month, police officers say.

Maj. Gen. Abdel Jalil Khalaf , the commander of Basra's police, said Thursday that self-styled enforcers of religious law threatened, beat and sometimes shot women who they believed weren't sufficiently Muslim.

"This is a new type of terror that Basra is not familiar with," he said. "These gangs represent only themselves, and they are far outside religious, forgiving instructions of Islam."
Often, he said, the "crime" is no more than wearing Western clothes or not wearing a head scarf.

Before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Iraqi women had had rights enshrined in the country's constitution since 1959 that were among the broadest of any Arab or Islamic nation. However, while the new constitution says that women are equal under the law, critics have condemned a provision that says no law can contradict the "established rulings" of Islam as weakening women's rights.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t George W. Bush and his crowd crow that they were liberating the people of Iraq? Hmm, some liberation.

Under Saddam Hussein, women were part of his government, owned businesses, became doctors and university professors. Now, under the Shi’ite thugs the White House has put in power, women have no rights, face rape and abuse daily, can’t go to school and most can only be out of the house with permission from a male. And all of this mayhem has been bought and paid for by the U.S. taxpayers.

One didn’t have to be a genius to figure out that if Bush deposed Saddam and allowed the Shi’ites to take over the country, they would not only go on a murderous rampage, they would impose their own version of Sharia law. But even worse, they would look south to Iran, which is run by Shi’ites, for inspiration and major back-up. And that’s exactly what has happened.

Now, Baghdad resembles Berlin, replete with walls. Sunnis and Shi’ites hiding in terror, afraid to walk into other neighborhoods. Kidnapping for ransom is a now a major business. Children gunned down while playing soccer. A trip to the market is as dangerous as handling a live landmine.

No wonder the Bushies are now arming the Sunnis hoping to mitigate the stupidity of putting into power a group of religious nutjobs. As I warned on other news forums before the first bombs fell, the U.S. might end up creating a dual regional power as Tehran slowly assumes control of the new government in Baghdad. Gee, I wish I had been wrong.

Nice going Bushies. I hope historians justifiably recount your appalling incompetence.

Bush is an evil man who deserves to be sentenced to prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

I think Bush is a lot of things. But I am not going to call him a traitor or put the blame for 9-11 on his shoulders.

His actions don't merit him being charged as a traitor under U.S. law. I personally believe he had some warning of a catastrophic attack on U.S. soil, but either hoped his intelligence agencies would find some way to stop it or he and his cabinet downplayed the threat.

I do believe, as EddyBear says, that women and children in the U.S. are definitely worse off than they were during the Clinton years.
