They're not too hard to spot. When I select "new posts," all the spammers have odd names and the threads they've spammed are all bunched together in the new posts list.

much, if not most of the of the spam probably can be prevented by placing time or interval limits on posting by nu bs. if there is a post count required for nu bs to start a thread, then there should also be a post count requirement for multiple posts within a limited time span. for instance a nu be (one with less than 20, 30 posts or whatever is deemed appropriate) posts at 10:00 am, he or she should not be able to make another post for 10, 15 or perhaps even 30 minutes.

Spammers want to hit a site and post many times quickly, then move on to another site. A time limit will foil this attempt and make attacking the site unproductive. In today's attack there were 8 posts within 3 minutes. with a time delay requirement there would have been only one. If the spammer with one post gets banned, he has to come back and reregister with another handle to post again. most spammers won't want to go thru this trouble.

While I am not a programmer, from what I know, it should not be too hard to write a few lines of code and add it to the program that operates this site to make the changes. It should about the same as when the requirements for starting a new thread were put in place.

another thing that the board can do is take an extra day or two to approve a new member's id. Most of these spammers are using temp emale addy's to register for these sites which expire after a time. If the approval email is held for a few days, there's a good chance that the temp emali would have expired and thus useless. Won't stop them all, but probably a significant amt.
