Each square is sold for some amount (e.g. $10) and then numbers are picked and laid out on each side (which in turn is associated with a team). You then look at the last digit of the score for each team -- a score of 31 to 21 would pay off for whoever held square 1 and 1. In short, aceofclubs didn't win a lot of money he thought he was going to because the final score changed in the last 16 secs.
