I doubt they lied to me. It's more than likely I misunderstood. I'm not that smart when it comes to computers. Come to think of it, I'm not that smart when it comes to much of anything.

    crowe,
your host is most probably lying to you. here's how it usually works:
I want to spam, but I wont use my server because then I'm traceable. So, I look around for an unsecured SMTP server, then I use that server to send out my spam.
Just one of many ways people spam. The biggest problems are stupid isps/hosts who can't properly secure their smtp servers, thereby allowing anyone to spam through them. Then of course there are the hosts whose entire business is working with spammers.

This may be relevant. I opened my email the other morning with about seventy five outraged emails from people who told me how they didn't appreciate my sending them information on Viagra by mail, youngest teens on the net (What's that mean, they photo them at 12:01 am on their birtday) as well as information on refinancing your home. Clearly, I am affiliated with none of these businesses.

I called my server who told me there's a virus going around which invades your computer via email (Don't Click here, ever!) The virus then gets into your email - as well as bringing along a few thousand others, and sends out emails touting the above products and services on your email address. This would mean your stored email addresses could have gone with the bathwater, so to speak.

I am by no means a computer expert, in fact, I limp along with a computer powerful enough to launch a pre-emptive strike, but only know how to use the writing program and surf the internet. (And that's limited to the obvious). Oh, and hit the print button, of course.

Hope this might shed some light.

SB - It's not going to justme@server.com. That I'd understand. It's being sent to MY_REAL_NAME@server.com and has 'justme' in the subject line. I have made a point of never stating me email address in any hobbyboard post, so there's no way that anyone outside of the people above could connect 'justme' with MY_REAL_NAME@server.com unless they were told.

so how much are address going for now days......?

funny but my old viagravic address which is the same one that you have, is the oldest one that i have used in this business (3 years). i also used it to register at jag, UG, TBD and several other semi and private boards, yet i've never recieved any spam at that box whats o' ever. now my much newer "Ozzy" address which is had by NO boards and only a handfull of people, recieves spam everyday.

    btw....

    ViagraVic
    Candy Day
    Guy Catelli
    Wall Street Banker
    rufus moses

at least i'm in good company......but i gotta ask.....guy catelli? i remember you telling me at the time that it was just he and i that had your address, but at least you gave me yours for a good reason.

Spam is wierd. There are some accounts I have that I expected to get spam on, but get very little or none ( I'm more surprised at the "very little" than the "none", since I would think that once you get ONE, it means you're on some list somewhere, and then....). One thing I have noticed is that I tend to get a lot less spam on Yahoo accouints than hotmails accounts ( a LOT less ). And I don't think it's a "fliter thing", because it's not that it goes to the junk mail folder on Yahoo, it just doesn't show up period ( or does Yahoo just totally block it , and do it well ??? ).

A question: Was it just sent to justme@xyz.com, or was it one of those "to justme@xyz.com, justme1@xyz.com, justme2@xyz.com, justme3@xyz.com....."

Also, I agree with Candide that sometimes someone will purposely go to some site and sign up with your email addy just so you start to get a bunch of spam as a "terrorisat tactic".

The main difference is that I give out my address to almost no one because it is my real address (the one my friends use to mail me). If it had come to (my real name) I would have just erased it, but it came specifically to 'justme' which is a name I only use on hobbyboards. As such I have to assume one of the following sold my address:

    aspd.net (and Amber)
    JAG (and the twins)
    UtopiaGuide (and Allen & SB)
    (deleted)
    (deleted)
    ViagraVic
    Candy Day
    Guy Catelli (I know)
    Wall Street Banker
    rufus moses

Now, I really don't think it was any of the last 8 (if it was, I'm gone from the boards). Who do you think sent it?

(And now some of you know what 'exclusive' company you're in - heh)

    K.S.,

That particular virus propogates by sending itself out to everyone in your Outlook address book.

Your getting a bunch of them simply means that your K.S. e-mail addies is in a lot of guys address books [gee whiz, I wonder why]. :)

The exact same thing happened to me when I posted on the JAG non member board back when Adriana was around - and also a few times when I use to post on TBD - the spams were about fisting and were pretty harsh so I thought it was malicious - and they sent it to my regular e-mail account under my real name. I told the JAG webmaster and TBD but they thought I was crazy or I deserved it or both.

You know, although I no longer use my old Kimberly Sweet email, I still occasionally check it (there's a PR consultant in Beverly Hills with almost the exact same email, and it's funny to see what I end up with.)

ANYWAY, that last round of viruses - the one "I send you this for your approval" or whatever it said - well, KS got a LOT of those. None of my other emails got any, but KS got it about a dozen times. It makes me think that someone was sending it to me on purpose.

KS also gets spammed, and I can tell it's someone who just thought they'd use my email addy - but I don't know if they did it out of actual maliciousness, or if they were just using my email when signing up for stuff.

Not accusing anyone but just a couple of weeks ago when I had words with someone I began to get spammed as well.
