    The Diameter of the Bomb

    Yehuda Amichai

The diameter of the bomb was thirty centimeters

and the diameter of its effective range about seven meters,

with four dead and eleven wounded.

And around these, in a larger circle

of pain and time, two hospitals are scattered

and one graveyard. But the young woman

who was buried in the city she came from,

at a distance of more than a hundred kilometers,

    enlarges the circle considerably,

and the solitary man mourning her death

at the distant shores of a country far across the sea

includes the entire world in the circle.

And I won’t even mention the crying of orphans

that reaches up to the throne of God and

    beyond, making

a circle with no end and no God.

"The Diameter of the Bomb," from THE SELECTED POETRY OF YEHUDA AMICHAI, by Yehuda Amichai. Translated by Chana Bloch. English translation copyright 1986, 1996 by Chana Bloch and Stephen Mitchell.

Yes, there is a quote for every occasion

Unfortunately, we do need to understand, or at least absorb, what happens, and words are what we have.

Here are some, from WB Yeats:

I have met them at close of day
    Coming with vivid faces
From counter or desk among grey
    Eighteenth-century houses.
I have passed with a nod of the head
    Or polite meaningless words,
Or have lingered awhile and said
    Polite meaningless words,
And thought before I had done
Of a mocking tale or a gibe
    To please a companion
Around the fire at the club,
Being certain that they and I
But lived where motley is worn:
    All changed, changed utterly:
    A terrible beauty is born.

How about, "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem"? That defines our President's policy and clearly should demarcate on whose side each nation will be.

    The beauty of sayings

There is always a quote for every occasion... unfortunately some occasions transcend a quote...

Even simpler, "the price of freedom is blood".

The tree of liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of the patriots
