Wooosh! It went right over my head...or, rather, right by my proof reading ability.
sorry, Ww, I was just ribbing you for using the acronym AMP instead of APM.....
Maybe SB intended it as a prediction!?
For the record, no massage parlor (asian or otherwise)has ever Banned me from the premises!
Aspd uses avatars. Before I got my high speed connection, it significantly slowed down page d/l's.
As noted, epithet does often come with a negative connotation. My introduction to the word, however, came when studying the classics. Homer often used epithets (swift footed Achilles) with absolutely no negative connotation. I see the User Titles that SB uses as being completely analogous to Homer's epithets.
Personally, I was hoping for "Crater's Bane", but I can't complain. I think it is better that the AMP assigns them than if users pick their own; it adds an element of quirkiness to the proceedings.
According to justme's link, that WOULD be an avatar if that is what Vishnu looks like in "animal" form.
So an avatar would be more like something like this?
I think the confusion is that many version of 'board software' allow for avatars, which are little pictures and show up under poster's handles. vBulletin calls the things we are talking about here User Titles.
I could see a picture being called an "avatar". I just can't see an ephithet being called an "avatar".
While I agree with you that a tag-line of words is probably not properly called an "Avatar" . . .
I'm quite sure that in internet lingo, "Avatar" is the proper word for a "character" or picture assigned to a participant in a message board or chat room. (and I'm not surprised the American Heritage Dictionary link did not contain that definition)
Besides, "epithet" usually has such a NEGATIVE connotation... uh um, never mind.
(The smart ass thing would have been to post a link to your post...)
I peirced the void and all I got was this lousy avatar!
Cloud Nine's long lost sister
Warning: Do not fluff!
Since Slinky doesnt deem me significant enough to crown me with a glorious and shining avatar, I have created this thread to "knight" myself and others with avatars who dont have one (or rename others with one.)
Cloud Nine suggestions:
Look ma, no claws!
(a blank space, -since I want one and SB won't give me one)
